First Year Tips for You to Crush Your Freshman Year (with Ana Jogaib)

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

What’s your name and what year are you in?

My name is Ana Clara Jogaib and I am a junior at USF.

What are the top 3 things you wish you had known before arriving in college?

Before I arrived in college, I wish I had known how everyone is on a different part of their journey, and there is no need to compare yourself with others (since you will also get there).

Plus, I wish I hadn't taken all of my GED courses on my first semesters, since on your later semesters you will end up just taking hard courses.

How was your first year? What was great and what could have been better?

The first semester of my first year was great since my classes were not very hard. I made a ton of friends at USF, and made myself a part of the Brazilian community there.

My second semester was a bit harder, since I had not found a good study rhythm for my classes and was starting to struggle a bit.

The friends I made that first semester really helped me feel more at home at USF, and I wish I had known about not procrastinating and working ahead on things I had more difficulty on.

What are your top 3 recommendations for first year students?

My 3 recommendations for first years are:

  • Do not get lost in the freedom of living by yourself for the first time.

  • Prioritize your studies over any social opportunities (there will be plenty of them).

  • Take care of your physical health (eat properly and exercise).
