First Year Tips for You to Crush Your Freshman Year (with Mariana Gonçalves)

Updated: Apr 9, 2021

What’s your name and what year are you in?

Mariana. Sophomore.

What are the top 3 things you wish you had known before arriving in college?

  1. I wish I had known that I would spend more money that I thought at Starbucks.

  2. I wish I could have participated in more events related to professional development during my first semester.

  3. Last thing, I wish I had known that my classes would be way more difficult than and time consuming than I thought.

How was your first year? What was great and what could have been better?

My freshman year was awesome, and the parties and the friends I’ve made were the best thing.

Something that could have been better is the fact that covid showed up during my spring break, so actually I haven’t had a real spring break yet.

What are your top 3 recommendations for first year students?

Three things that I definitely recommend to first year students are:

  1. GET INVOLVED!!! There’re hundreds of organizations on campus and I love being part of some of them. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of people and to develop amazing projects.

  2. My second tip is to go to office hours so you can get closer to your professors. They can help you with more detail and even help you with some extra points at the end of the semester.

  3. My last tip is to encourage you to go to conferences and career fairs even if it’s your first semester in college. It’s a great opportunity to network and to talk to companies. The sooner you go these events, the better prepared you are gonna be.
