First Year Tips for You to Crush Your Freshman Year (with Victoria Martins)
What’s your name and what year are you in?
Victoria, freshman.
What are the top 3 things you wish you had known before arriving in college?
You don’t have to panic, everything will work out eventually.
Don’t take up too much that you can’t handle, be honest with yourself and your strengths and weaknesses.
Don’t be afraid to make friends and ask for help.
How was your first year? What was great and what could have been better?
Overall, besides the pandemic my first year was good.
The great things:
One of the best things was being able to make friends regardless of the classes being online. I was able to have true connections with people who have been there for me in the best and the more complicated times of the semester.
All of the support I received from USF really made me grateful for being able to study in a university such as USF. Which made me adapt to and understand better my online classes.
Joining BRASA was definitely one of the best experiences of my freshman year.
Things that could have been better
I didn’t get my freshman year “on campus experience” because of the pandemic so that could have definitely been better.
I wasn’t really organized at first with my classes which made everything become a bit overwhelming my first semester.
At first, online classes came as a shock to me and it took a while for me to get used to it and truly dedicatemyself to them.
What are your top 3 recommendations for first-year students?
Stay organized, if you are able to organize yourself from the beginning, everything will be easier to handle.
Don’t take up classes you can’t handle at first and research your major. If you are not totally sure about a class or your major, do your research and find out if what you are doing is actually what you want to be doing.
Don’t be afraid to make friends. Connecting with people and making new friends are definitely what will keep you going and help a lot. There are several freshman groups, roommate groups, and major groups. You can also make friends in your classes and join an organization!
